Ms. Georgette Grier-Key, Executive Director & Curator, Eastville Community Historical Society will explore the little known role of African Americans in the maritime history of Long Island. During the “golden age” of whaling (1800-1860), African Americans comprised 25 percent of whaling crews. After the Civil War and well into the late half of the 19th century more than half the whaling crews were African-American. Only recently have scholars begun to bring to light their significant contributions to the great whaling enterprise.
