When you think about the lunar landing, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn’t glass. But 50 years ago, the humble material of glass played an integral role in making an epic journey to the moon possible.

In conjunction with the exhibit Journey to the Moon: How Glass Got Us There, experience glassblowing for yourself by making a glass moon!

Open to ages 10 and up, this out of this world experience allows you to work with hot glass, while staying on the cool end of the glassblowing iron at all times. You’ll start by choosing the glass color you want to use for your moon. There is a special iridescent gold that is available for this project. You'll then partner with our professional glassblowers to create your moon. Your glassblower will drip the molten-hot glass into a special moon-shaped mold and you will blow hard into the blow pipe to fill the mold and create the design. The moon is then removed from the blowpipe and our glassblower will add a glass loop to the top. Your piece is then placed in an oven to begin an overnight slow cooling process. Moon ornaments are ready for pick up the following day or may be shipped for an additional fee within the U.S. and Canada.
