On Sunday November 11, 1945, a Navy Beechcraft Twin Engine Transport plane was travelling from Curtis Wright Caldwell Airport in Caldwell, NJ enroute back to the Quonset Air Naval Base in Quonset, RI, crashed near the northwest ridge of Mt. Beacon in the Town of Fishkill, NY. Six Navy personnel onboard were killed immediately upon impact. Navy legend, Commodore / Captain Dixie Kiefer, Commander of the Quonset Air Naval base was one of the six men who lost their lives that fateful day. The other five companions were Lieutenant Commander Ignatius Zielinski, 44, of Salem, Mass. Lieutenant Paul Lloyd Heinzen, 23, of Colorado Springs, Colo. Lieutenant Junior Grade Hans K. Kohler, 25, of Garfield, N.J. Aviation Machinist’s Mate Clarence Hooper, 23, of Greensboro, N.C. Seaman First Class David O. Wood, 23 of North Franklin, Ct. Commodore Kiefer of Blackfoot, Idaho was 49 at the time of his passing.
