Details

The Brooklyn Navy Yard was founded in 1801 as the New York Naval Shipyard, one of the most active and innovative military shipbuilding facilities in the United States. During the Revolutionary War, the site was the anchorage of the notorious British prison ships, on which an estimated 11,000 American patriots and other prisoners died under horrific conditions. For 165 years the Yard produced America's mightiest warships and related technologies that helped shape our nation's future. During WWll the "Can-Do" Yard employed 70,000 workers who built, converted or repaired over 5,000 ships in service to our nation. Tours available with audio clips of women and people of color describing the challenge and opportunity of doing this industrial work in WWII.
