Details

Seven generations of the socially-prominent Livingstons lived at Clermont, a Nat'l Historic Landmark. The riverside mansion's most notable resident was Chancellor Robert R. Livingston. Livingston was on the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence and he negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. He was also a patron of Robert Fulton, who refined the first practical steamboat, the North River Steamboat, later known as the Clermont.
