In the late 19th century, prominent civic leaders and financiers including botanist Elizabeth Gertrude Britton and industrialists Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt and J. Pierpont Morgan so believed in creating a public garden of the highest class that they matched public funds to create the New York Botanical Garden. The living plant museum still awes today with 250 acres of gardens and landscapes across this National Historic Landmark site.
