Details

Designed by great American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and the famed landscape team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the Richardson Olmsted Complex incorporated a system of enlightened treatment for people with mental illness developed by Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride. The Complex remains an architectural gem and is visited by thousands of people from around the world. The site is currently being redeveloped and restored as part of the one of the largest preservation projects in the nation. Tours led by expert docents feature access to the interior of this National Historic Landmark and the beautiful South Lawn is open to the public all year round. Free audio tours are also available to visitors with cell phones.
